Profile

Military Research Institute, state enterprise, is the only state-owned company issued by Ministry of Defence that holds the character of a research institute.

It ensures meeting strategic and other significant interests of the state in the field of defence and security, the development of capacities of the Army of the Czech Republic, armed forces and the Emergency System of the Czech Republic as well as it performs the activities of industrial and business nature to ensure supplies and services needed to guarantee the defence and safety of the Czech Republic and discharges liabilities based on the membership in NATO and the EU.

VVÚ performs research and experimental development assignments connected to higher innovations, mainly the technology of ground forces, materiel in the core fields of specialisation that are chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protection and connected fields, such as chemical protection of the army, sensors, electronic and cybernetic warfare, camouflage and deception, special metal and non-metal materials, technology of surface protection, the system of quality and the technology of logistics.

Mission VVU

According to the Community Framework for State Aid for Research and Development and Innovation 2006/C 323/01, article 2.2. Definition, paragraph d), these activities are the mission of VVU:

  • the research and experimental development to ensure defence and security of the state in the fields of technology and providing services connected to higher innovations, mainly ground military technique, materiel and logistics in the core fields of specialised authorities, such as:
    • chemical, biological and radiological protection and connected fields of chemical protection of forces,
    • sensors, electronic and cybernetic warfare, camouflage and deception,
    • special metal and non-metal materials, technology of surface protection, the system of quality and the technology of logistics;
  • the research aimed at the protection of inhabitants against weapons of mass destruction, chemical and/or nuclear and radiation accidents, chemical, electronic and cybernetic terrorism and attacks on significant objects of state infrastructure;
  • providing specialised support and services in the field technological, organisational and economic activities associated with or related to the armament of the Army of the Czech Republic: Ministry of Defence (MO AČR)???, organisations, companies and research institutions of the Czech Republic;
  • research and production of extremely dangerous chemical substances and dangerous chemical compounds and selling chemical substances and compounds classified as highly toxic for research and training purposes;
  • conducting contractual expertises and trials, ensuring specialised preparation and the training of the Army of the Czech Republic, Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, foreign armies and the employees of international organisations for the activities connected to the detection, identification, protection and destruction of the effects of the use or misuse of weapons of mass destruction.

The inseparable part of VVU activities is to publish findings and their propagation via scientific articles, education and training.

1919 The Military Technical Institute (VTÚ) and the Military Chemical Institute in Prague were established for testing and certification of protective equipment against chemical weapons.

1945 After the end of the Second World War, the activities are resumed, the Institute bears the name of the Military Scientific Technical Institute (VVTÚ), later the Military Technical Institute (VTÚ). The research and development in the protection against chemical weapons is extended to the protection against nuclear weapons.

1951 The Military Technical Academy (VTA) is established in Brno, which includes the Department of Material Science and Research Laboratory for Radio-Engineering Services.

1958 Due to the specificities of chemical research, the Research and Testing Centre 070 (VZS 070) is established in Brno by its detachment from the Military Technical Institute (VTÚ) in Prague. This is the first legal predecessor of the Military Research Institute (VVÚ).

1958 The research department of anti-radio-technical service (VPRS) was established as a part of the Military Technical Academy (VTA). Its activity was focused on the research of radio-technical reconnaissance systems. From 1975 to 1978, it was an autonomous Research Unit VP 062 in Brno.

1978 The merger of individual military service organisations VZS 070 (chemistry), VZS 150 (POL), VZS 080 (corrosion and protection against corrosion), VZS 040 (collective protection), VZS 020 (protection of combat vehicle crews) and VZS 130 (protection of foodstuff) gave rise to the Research Institute 070 in Brno (VÚ 070).

1978 The Research Electronic Institute 060 (VÚ 060) was founded in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia. The research unit VP 062 in Brno became part of VÚ 060.

1994 After the split of the Czechoslovak Federal Republic, the Military Technical Institute of Protection, an allowance organisation, was born as a result of the merger of VÚ 070 and the Brno research unit VÚ 060 (VTÚO, p. o.).

2005 Within the reorganisation, the Military Technical Institute of Protection (VTÚO, p. o.) becomes a part of the Military Repair Company (VOP-026 Šternberk, s. p., later re-named to VOP CZ, s. p.) as its division as the Brno Military Technical Institute of Protection (VTÚO Brno).

2012 On 29 August 2012, the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic established the Military Research Institute as a state enterprise. (VVÚ, s.p.). Its establishment was approved by the Government of the Czech Republic at its meeting on 19 June 2012.
